Since a junior in high school I had been stuck in a never-ending revolving circle of bicep curls, leg extensions, and peck flies. I was on a constant, never satisfying pursuit to getting big/ ripped. I was thirsty for knowledge that would better my own physical gains. From taking personal training courses, college nutritional classes, and trying to copy the “elite”. Meanwhile, I was also 100% committed to Jiu-Jitsu and trying to become a better fighter. At some point I began to realize that all the isolation exercises I was doing in gym was greatly hindering my athletic performance. So I had quit exercising in the gym.

The first time I heard of CrossFit and got online to check it out, I didn’t think much of it. There were no days that were devoted to chest or arms and I remember thinking, what the hell is a muscle up? I spent maybe 30 seconds on the site and wrote it off. After that I didn’t hear of CrossFit until a year later when a CrossFiter ran circles around me on the mat. I asked him what he did for training, and there was that word again . . . . CROSSFIT.

This time I took a better look, and after watching “Fight Gone Bad” and “Nasty Girls” (see left sidebar for videos) all night, I was hooked. From that point on I had to completely re-learn everything I thoughtI knew of fitness, exercise, and nutrition. Now my greatest passion has been to show people that there are ways other than the chrome rows of machines and the high carb food pyramid. To train people to be better than they have ever been before, in every way. To ramp up the capabilities of the young and elite, and to turn back the clock for the elderly. CrossFit is my sport. CrossFit is my life.

Spokane County Firefighter, District 9

I first heard about CrossFit from one of my brethren firefighters.  At the time I had been trying to stay motivated in doing a well advertised workout program, but would usually fall off the wagon after 2-3 weeks.  I though I was in decent shape until my first few workouts at CrossFit 509 and found out that I wasn’t.

Being a Firefighter, it is imperative to try and stay in good physical condition, because you are constantly dealing with highly demanding and physically challenging situations, much like CrossFit workouts.  Since I have been doing CrossFit I have noticed a huge difference in everything I do at work and at home.  My endurance, strength, stamina, power and agility have all increased as my waist  size and fat % have decreased.  My eating habits have changed due to the diets that CrossFit recommend, and I feel great!

I’ve been active in teaching in the community for 8 years and have had a drive to guide and educate others.  After being introduced to CrossFit my immediate thought was to guide and educate other through this amazing program.

I believe in dedication and hard work and this is what firefighting and CrossFit are about.
